– Sebastijao Salgado

Prevazilazeći dokumentarističke principe fotografije, u trenucima planinarenja i intuitivnog istraživanja autorka nevidljivo čini vidljivim, hvatajući ono što naziva „Monuments of Nature“, odnosno „Spomenici prirode“ – dugogodišnju seriju foto-eseja u koju spada i ova izložba. Njena interesovanja su duboko oblikovana autentičnim prirodnim nasleđem kako u Srbiji tako i širom sveta, a naročito onim mestima koja trpe tihe transformacije često prouzrokovane ljudskim faktorom.

Monumentalne forme planinskih grebena, autohtona flora, mnogobrojni irigacioni kanali – takozvane levade koje kroje putanje kretanja – imaginarne klisure i magloviti trenuci u lovorovoj šumi, često u tišini evociraju nevidljive sile prostora.

English:

“I believe that the average person can help a lot, not by giving material goods, but by participating, by being part of the discussion, by being truly concerned about what is going on in the world.” – Sebastião Salgado

Transcending the documentary principles of photography, through moments of hiking and intuitive exploration, the artist renders the invisible visible — capturing what she calls “Monuments of Nature”, a long-standing series of photo-essays to which this exhibition belongs. Her interests are deeply shaped by authentic natural heritage, both in Serbia and across the world, and particularly by those places undergoing silent transformations often caused by human intervention.
The monumental forms of mountain ridges, indigenous flora, the intricate network of levadas (irrigation channels) that trace the pathways of movement, dreamlike gorges and misty moments within the laurel forest, together silently evoke the invisible forces of a landscape. Immersing oneself in the Atlantic rainforest of Madeira, the island of eternal spring, reveals a world in which nature lives undisturbed in its original state, beyond the reach of human influence. The title “Sull Lull” is inspired by a composition by the jazz trio of Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem, and Shaukat Hussain. Through a similarly spontaneous approach, they explored their own sensibilities, drawing the listener into a fluid world of the imaginary.

The exhibition's musical accompaniment is the work of Nemanja Dunđerski, who explores the sound identity of the island through ambient music, focusing particularly on the Fanal Forest and the mountain peak of Pico do Arieiro. Drawing on the aesthetics of minimalism, the composer combines ethereal textures with authentic field recordings, alongside infinitely slow sonic threads that seem to be learning how to pass over the world in silence. Through this process, a profound, mystical experience of this landscape is articulated — one in which something strangely familiar yet entirely incomprehensible is recognized.

In her critical review of the exhibition concept and the artist's work, Jelena Perać, art historian and museum advisor at the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade, points out: “With the series of photographs Sull Lull, Milica Nikolić builds upon her previous photographic cycles, in which the theme of nature holds a central place — whether in the landscapes of her native Zemun or throughout her numerous photographic travelogues. The photographs of Madeira's magical landscapes, created in the spirit of the work of Brazilian photographer and environmental activist Sebastião Salgado, are imbued with a surreal atmosphere. They portray the primordial power of nature, whose timeless scenes impose themselves upon Milica's lens. Her images of nature's raw power, which survives solely through its own forces — independent of human presence and influence — bear witness to a single and ultimate truth: that it is nature alone which persists eternally, transcending all that is human and completely self-sufficient.”

The exhibition runs until the end of June, 10-17h.
